Have you ever wondered how plants transfer water from their roots to their leaves? Using a phenomenon called capillary action, plants take up water like drinking through a straw. You can actually watch this happen with food coloring!

Explore

Take a tree inventory. Choose an area in our community (your backyard, a block, a park, a forested area) and count how many trees of each species you can find. Create a graph showing your findings. Use a bar graph or pie chart.

Next, figure out the age of a tree or the area of a crown of a tree.
